What to Do in Your First Week After a Layoff

A day-by-day guide to the critical first week after losing your job. Take control and set yourself up for success.

The first week after a layoff sets the tone for your entire job search. Here's exactly what to do, day by day.

Day 1-2: Process and Protect

Let Yourself Feel

It's okay to be upset, angry, or in shock. Take time to process before jumping into action mode.

Review Your Severance

Read everything carefully. Note the deadline to sign (usually 21-45 days). Don't rush to sign.

Secure Your Benefits

  • Understand your health insurance options (COBRA vs. ACA)
  • Note when coverage ends
  • Download any employee benefit information

Document Everything

  • Save copies of performance reviews
  • Export relevant contacts
  • Download work samples (that you can legally keep)
  • Note your accomplishments and metrics

Day 3-4: Stabilize Finances

File for Unemployment

Do this immediately. Benefits typically start from the week you file, not when you were laid off.

Calculate Your Runway

Add up your resources (savings + severance + unemployment) and divide by monthly expenses. Know exactly how long your money will last.

Cut Non-Essential Expenses

Cancel or pause subscriptions. Reduce dining out. Every dollar saved extends your runway.

Day 5-7: Prepare for the Search

Update Your Resume

  • Add end date to your last role
  • Quantify accomplishments with numbers
  • Tailor for your target roles

Update LinkedIn

  • Refresh your headline and summary
  • Turn on "Open to Work"
  • Start engaging with your network

Tell Your Network

Reach out to former colleagues, mentors, and friends. Let them know you're looking. Most jobs come through connections.

Set Up Your Search Infrastructure

  • Create job board accounts
  • Set up job alerts
  • Organize a tracking system

The Week 1 Checklist

  • Review and understand your severance package
  • File for unemployment benefits
  • Understand health insurance options
  • Calculate your financial runway
  • Cut non-essential expenses
  • Update resume and LinkedIn
  • Notify your close network
  • Set up job search tracking system
  • Create daily routine for job search
  • Schedule self-care activities

What NOT to Do in Week 1

  • Sign severance immediately without reviewing
  • Badmouth your employer publicly
  • Make major financial decisions
  • Isolate yourself
  • Apply to 100 jobs with a generic resume
  • Neglect your mental and physical health
